You can use the FAST wizard to copy the information to CD by reviewing the
info in the article. Or you can backup all of the needed DBX files for as
many identities as you presently have on the old machine to CD, copy them to
new folders on your new hard drive, remove the Read-Only attribute that is
set when a file is copied to a CD and then open Outlook Express and import
the information.
For most users, FAST is simple. Using manual backup is also simple once
you've done it a time or two. Many of use the manual method to backup files
on a weekly basis. All depends on your "comfort level" when working with
Windows.
GUID is an acronym for "Globally Unique IDentifier" which is the big, long
numeric that identifies your Mail identity in the registry.
Using FAST makes setup simple although passwords are not retained and will
have to be re entered in Outlook Express under Tools/Accounts for the
involved accounts.

It seems I may have gotten some wrong information. After reading the
article you sent me to, it appears I was under a missimpression. I
thought both old and new computer had to be up and running at the same
time, and a cable run between them. Having only one monitor and little
working space, I found this setup to be prohibitive. However, it seems I
can run the old one, collect the important data on disk, run the new one,
and then transfer the disks contents. Am I correct about this? If so,
how different is this than just saving the files on disk by choosing the
ones I've been told carry the setting/[reference settings, and
transferring to the appropriate place on the computer?
Would identifying the outlook files by XP transfer be different than
simply doing it through Windows Explorer?
What is a GUID? If I have the same ISP, mail servers, and newsgroups,
what changes when I go to new computer? I'm a bit confused.
Thanks for your help. Steven

The built in FAST wizard in XP works quite well, but you say you've ruled
it out. Have you ever read this article about how to use it:
293118 - HOW TO: Use Files and Settings Transfer Wizard in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=293118
If you don't want to use the wizard, then you'll have to use the method
outlined he
http://www.insideoe.com/backup/index.htm
But be aware, you will not be using the same "identities" as such since
you will have all new GUIDs. To retain the GUIDs and thereby the
identities, you would have to "clone" your setups as outlined he

I am getting a new computer. What OE files do I need to transfer to my
new computer in order to keep the same identities, servers, emails -
sent/received -, address books, newsgroups subscribed to, etc? Where do
I find the files? What is the exact procedure?
I will not be using the XP File Transfer program. Rather, I'll copy the
important files to disk and reestablish them in the rpoper plces.
Thanks for your help.
