*Did* this start immediately after loading SP3? Please answer and try this
next.
See if the problem persists in a new named identity.
You may have a damaged identity especially if it is the default Main
Identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it.
If all is well, you can import your messages and Address Book from the old
identity and delete it.

I have two machines that were running XP SP2. I downloaded and installed
SP3 to both.
One PC is still ok. The other has corrupted Outlook Express.
The preview pane is visible but there are no contents. I know the
dangers of having preview on, so please don't tell me that I should
manage without preview!
Any help appreciated.
