Default OE Socket Error: 11004, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

Hi Mary,

Have you tried restarting the PC when the problem arises, or using another
dial-up number (if available)? This may set things right if the PC is not
turned-off often or the connection number has become unreliable -- at least
in the short term of a few days or perhaps longer.

I would suggest not using the e-mail scan feature of your A/V program. Even
if not the cause of your current issue there is a good chance it will cause
future send/receive connection problems.

Some Ideas from the Microsoft KB
These points are more problematic because of the intermittent nature of the
problem.

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods as appropriate
for your situation.
Method 1: Confirm That Your E-Mail Server Settings Are Correct
For information about the correct settings for your e-mail server, contact
your Internet service provider (ISP) or system administrator.
Method 2: Configure Firewall Software
Configure your firewall software to grant access to the Internet for the
following files.
For Outlook Express: Msimn.exe
For Outlook: Outlook.exe
By default, most e-mail clients have to have outbound access on port 110 and
inbound access on port 25. For more information about the ports that
communicate with your e-mail server, contact your ISP or system
administrator.

Smart People:

I have a new Dell computer running Windows XP Media Center Edition
2002, SP2 and this is what's happening: I get online (I have a dial-up
connection) and get email and use the internet and all works fine,
sometimes. But quite frequently everything stalls. The monitor icon
in the system tray says I'm connected, but I can't get on the Internet
or receive/send email. In Outlook Express I get this message:

Server could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the
server name correctly... Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 11004, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D.

I've searched this forum & others looking for solutions and have tried
shutting off my AV email scan (EZTrust) and that did not work. In fact
after turning off the AV email scan I got Socket Error: 10060, Error
Number 0x800CCC0E.

I have to disconnect (it takes about 20 seconds to disconnect after
this happens) and then reconnect and sometimes all works well for a
while (an hour or so) and sometimes it doesn't. This problem is
occurring daily.

Can someone help me solve this problem, it's driving me nuts and is
most annoying.

Thank you.
