Default Rules problem

No it's not with an Exchange account.

I restarted Outlook using the /cleanrules switch and it apparently solved
the problem. Sorry to be so ignorant; thanks very much for your help.

In the new installation of Outlook 2003 I right-clicked on a dozen or so
messages in the Inbox and used the 'Create rule' option to create rules.
I
also opted to have the rule applied to those messages currently in the
inbox,
so the messages were transferred to the designated folders.

And when I go to the Tools / Rules & Alerts option, I see those rules
listed, but I note that the function buttons for working with them, such
as
the X to delete, etc., are greyed out and inactive. They are not
effective
on further incoming mail of the same types by which the rules were
originally
created. And I see that this list of a dozen or more rules are not shown
in
the list under the 'Run the Rules' option.

Only if I create a rule from within the Rules & Alerts window, which
involves selecting addresses from the Contacts list, will the function
buttons become activated, and will the rule be entered in the 'Run the
Rules'
option.

Right now I have a dozen or more ineffective rules, which I am unable to
delete, clogging up the Rules & Alerts window. Is there a solution?
