Default Outlook insists on being default email client

it should only do it when an office update is installed and it can't be
stopped.

Installed Outlook 2003 (11.8217.8221 SP3) a week ago for the Calendar
function only. Have not set up any mail accts. Am happy with my existing
mail client; however, whenever I run Outlook (Calendar) it insists on
setting
itself as the default mail client. The check box in Tools/Options/Other
is
NOT checked. Fortunately my mail client warns me that Outlook has
hijacked
the mailto: association and I reset it each time, which is tedious. Any
ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks a lot.
