Default Outlook 2000 Will Not Send

Thanks Roady,

I installed Outlook using corporate/workgroup mode.

I really don't know if Exchange is setup to send internet mail. The only
thing I do know is that with no changes made to Exchange, the Win98 box
worked and this XP Pro box won't. We don't have an IT department here and I'm
the lucky one assigned to iron these kinds of things out. My troubleshooting
skills normally consist of things like when my car stops on the highway I
lift the hood to see if the giant on/off switch fell into the "off" position.

I know that our setup is antiquated. When I bought this XP Pro box and
called Dell they sent me to Microsoft who sent me back to Dell who sent me
back to Microsoft who referred me to The Geek Squad who doesn't want anything
to do with it. At least we finally got rid of those messy stone tablets and
chisels.

I wasn't saying that Express is making Exchange connections. I was just
trying Express to see if I could send internet mail from this client in some
fashion in an attempt to try to narrow the cause down. Which it did.

Your post doesn't add up. Outlook Express cannot make Exchange account
connections so you either are not using an Exchange account connection in
Outlook as well or you are using an alternative protocol like POP3 or IMAP.

Is the Exchange server itself configured to route the messages to the
Internet or not?
Did you install Outlook 2000 in Workgroup/Corporate mode or in Internet Mail
Only mode?

You're probably aware of this already, but things are very outdated in your
scenario.

I replaced my Win98 client with an XP Pro box. The server is running NT4
and
the mail server is running Exchange 5.5. I installed Outlook 2000 and
configured it the same way it had been on the Win98 machine but I can't
send
any mail to an internet mailbox. I can send mail to other mailboxes on our
network but nothing outside. Outlook will receive internet mail or from
within the shop.

I tried Outlook Express which has no trouble sending internet email. When
I
initially launched Express I had it to use the same settings I have setup
for
Outlook and it worked with no changes.

What needs to be done?

Any help appreciated.
Bob
