Default OE6 and PPS files-sound

I just saw the answer to your XP post. Glad it is resolved.

Just an FYI from me.

I installed PPV 2007 with SP2 with no problem. You don't need SP3 to install
it. Perhaps your anti-virus was running when you tried to install it?

SP2 will no longer be supported after April 2010. SP3 will be supported
until April, 2014.

If SP3 was downloaded with an anti-virus, or anti-spyware, program running,
you may have a bad installation.

From: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/w.../cc164204.aspx

* If the configuration of your antivirus software prevents certain system
files from being changed, SP3 installation might fail. Try temporarily
disabling your antivirus software. You can usually do this by right-clicking
your antivirus program icon (which typically appears in the bottom
right-hand corner of the computer screen) and clicking Disable.

* If you disable your antivirus software before you install the service
pack, be sure that you are aware of the risks involved, and be sure to
enable it after the service pack is installed.

Remove SP3 via Add/Remove Programs, reboot and download and install it
again. Before you do, turn off your anti-virus and any anti-spyware programs
such as Windows Defender. If you use a third party firewall, disable it and
turn on the Windows Firewall in the Control Panel for the installation. Once
SP3 is in and working, you can enable the third party firewall and turn of
the Windows Firewall. Do not keep both running.

Bruce:

Just an FYI. I have tried everything in PowerPoint, checked my PC
settings, etc:, to no avail. I downloaded openoffice.org 3.0 and they all
have their sound back. It must be something in PowerPoint 2003. I tried
to download PowerPoint 2007, but it won't run in XP with SP2. I'm not
about to download SP3, did that once on my old PC and had a total
nightmare.
Guess I will just have to either live without sound if I use PP or switch
to OpenOffice.

Thanks again for all your help.

The ones you sent me play fine here.

Did you actually check the 5 volume sliders in your speaker settings? If
one is off, some sounds will play fine, but not others.

You may also have a sound program. I have Creative Sound Blaster. That
has settings of its own. Check that out.

It is definitely not an issue with Outlook Express though since the one I
sent you did not have sound. You may want to pursue this in the XP
newsgroup if your volume settings are OK.

Here is one link to YouTube that I have been able to play for over two
years now and all of a sudden there is no sound.
YouTube - Merry Christmas from (mf)

Example of a PPS file. Found on the internet "thesimplelife.pps" great
slide show and the sound was beautiful, but can no longer play it.

I know you are busy so if and when you have time to take a look.

Thanks

I understand. I wanted to see if the sound was still there before they
were saved. There is no reason you should have to save them first to
open them, but if you would rather do that, it's your prerogative.

Do you have the speaker icon in the SysTray? Double click on it. Any of
the volume sliders all the way down?

Thanks Bruce:

I don't have a problem with opening the files after saving them to my
HHD. They open fine with PPT viewer. It's the sound that is now
missing.

Thanks again

And what if you actually open them in OE?

1: Save the attachment to your HDD. Right click on it and Open With |
Choose Program. Find and choose a program that works, (PowerPoint
Viewer). and then check the box: Always use this program to open this
kind of file. This should enable you to open these attachments in the
future.

2: Unable to open .PPS attachments directly from Outlook Express
using XP/SP2 or XP/SP3:

The problem with viewing PPS files in OE6 was resolved by copying
them to hard drive. However, I can no get sound on my PPS files.
Anyone have any suggestions or could it have been caused with a
windows update ? I have tried everything.

Thanks
