Default OE6 won't open pdf file with Adobe Reader - Help

In OE6 I cannot open a pdf attachment. I have Adobe Reader 9 and it
opens
the attachment after I save it and exit OE. Reader also opens pdf files
using Internet Explorer. But in OE6 it just reports: Unknown file type -
Use
Folder options to make association.

Actually, the association is already included in the filetype options -
for
pdf files, use Adobe Reader9. So why won't OE recognize this
association?

Check the headers. Is it MIME? Perhaps the Content-Type is
overriding the file type extension. E.g. in the same way that
by default of Security settings IE opens files after "MIME sniffing"
not just by extension. You could use ProcMon to see what is
really going on.

BTW instead of saving the attachment can you just drag it to
an already opened AR window?

No - drag doesn't work for email attachments.

It's not .eml files you want to drag, it's .pdf files.
And if you're trying to drag E-mail messages anywhere,
no, that won't work; then you would need to use Forward as attachment
to convert an E-mail message to an .eml attachment and then drag that.
BTW depending on the construction of a message and on the construction
of the dummy E-mail which contains the forwarded E-mail you might actually
see its attachments broken out as separate attachments in the forwarding E-mail.

But if I already have open an
instance of AR, the IE atch will open!

This is just adding to the confusion. Again, I was only expecting
that you would be working with .pdf attachments. Or are you
trying to imply that you did have a .pdf attachment and dragged
it to an open IE window where it opened? Then, if you are surprised
that the .pdf file is opening in a browser window be aware that
that may be occurring because of one of AR options.

(Ctrl-k IIRC gets you into its Preferences dialog but that may
have changed in a newer release such as the one you have...
Looks like Ctrl-k, Internet, then Display PDF in browser.)

This tells me - maybe - I have
improperly removed a 'start-up' applet for AR that is supposed to be running
in tsr. (I've been know to shut down any 'start-up' or 'running process' I
didn't recognize.) If so, its probably an OS issue, not an OE issue.

Thots??

Why do some only answer one question at time?
Sometimes just the first question, sometimes just the last... ; }

Also, AR is pretty particular about its file type.
You would probably do better using its repair tool
(e.g. in Add/Remove Programs) and having it rebuild them
than just relying on the generic Open with... dialog.

Good luck
