Default I keep losing entries to my calendar.

I've entered meetings, tasks, events, etc into my calendar for 6 months
ahead. When I shut down and restart the next day, all is gone. What am I
doing wrong? I've done the tutorial for using the calendar twice and think I
understand and am entering correctly.
