I don't think you can do what you want.

If you group messages by conversations, then sorting by date will sort
by the first DISPLAYED message in the thread. If you've hidden Read
messages, that will sort by the first unread message of the thread. But
I'm guessing you want the whole thread displayed (read and unread) so
that won't help much.
