Since you also fail to mention the version of Outlook, the type of Mail
account, and what addins are installed, any response would be pure
guesswork.
Allthough if it takes an hour to finish checking the data file, this might
indicate a hw problem, as suggested by Peter

I and others that i know keep getting this message on starting up outlook:

Maybe the outlook reason is (for the other 2 conditions i have no clue
why)
-an extn failed to initialize, cant open extend. dat. the file may not
exist....
- error in registry for extension - exchange extensions. the syntax or
format of registry is incorrect..
