Check your account online to see if there is a message that is not
downloading. All messages must download before messages are marked as
downloaded. There may be a large message that is causing the connection to
timeout.

Are you virus scanning incoming email?

I have dial up. My OE6 is set to download the new messages on AOL then
hang up. I am getting all my new messages, but I am also getting lots of
old messages. For example, yesterday I downloaded 30 new messages, today
I downloaded 35 new message (the first 30 were downloaded yesterday too).
Tomorrow I'll download 38 new messages (the first 35 of which were already
downloaded).
