Default IE does not go on the web-page whose address is pasted in

[Crossposted to IE General newsgroup]

Your post's headers tell us that you're running WinXP SP2 right now.

What is the exact (verbatim) error message you're getting?

What problems were you having that you thought a Repair Install might
resolve?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed the post-Repair Install updates?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it and
which may have been reinstall, but invalid, when you did the Repair
Install)?

There is an error in the IE6, which manifests itself as follows. The IE
does
not go on the web-page, whose address is pasted in the address window of
the
IE. A second window of IE appears, and this second window is not filled
and
is not closed. The situation can be subdued only through the Task Manager
and End Process. But the first IE window opens normally. And transition to
another web-page through a link (not through pasting in the address window
of IE) happens normally.

This state arises after installing update KB958215, which is required
after
my system restoration by the Windows XP's repair. Automatic Updates has
been
set up to 'Notify me but don't automatically download or install them'. It
was proposed to install about 30 updates. The installation of all updates
except KB958215 was made without any adverse effects. But installation the
KB958215 gave the described above error.

How to get out of the situation, so you can transfer the system to the
'Automatic (Recommended)' for Automatic Updates?
