Thanks - it'd be nice if it said that on the tin!

The short answer? Dump Norton completely.
To remove Norton completely, see:
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1659201,00.asp
and:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=878462
and:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039
I use, and recommend, AVG Free:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5
or:
http://www.grisoft.com/doc/40/lng/ww
When prompted, choose Custom Installation and *uncheck* e-mail scanning
when
you see the option.
Norton, and McAfee, products are not Outlook Express friendly, and I
don't
know of any OE-MVP that would recommend using them.

I'm having the same problem, and after studying various posts I've
disabled
the virus checking on outgoing emails, but on the rare occasions I
manage
to
get one out without the error message coming up, I still get a Norton
pop-up
saying that it's checking! Any ideas how to stop this?

Turn off the e-mail scanning in your anti-virus.

You are still protected:

If you have an Anti-Spam program, that can also be the cause of the
error.
