Right click on the Notification Area | Properties | Customize. Locate the
icon and change the behavior to Always Hide.

If you want to disable Windows Messenger completely, use the Manage Add-on
feature.
Open IE | Tools | Manage Add-ons. Disable Windows Messenger. It can be
enabled in the future if you wish.
