Cannot read news in Outlook
This is the most common question in this group and the solution is simple.
To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, clear the "Always perform this check..." box and then click the No
button.

Outlook does not and never has supported NNTP (network news transfer
protocol). Outlook EXPRESS supports NNTP. Any "news" function in Outlook
ends up loading Outlook Express to do newsgroups. You might as well as
just start by opening Outlook Express to do the newsgroups.
You sure it is opening a directory called "1030" and not one called
"1033"? What do you mean by "opening"? Is Explorer getting loaded with
it pointing at some folder on your hard drive? If so, to WHAT folder
(i.e., what is the *full* path to the folder)? Or is 1030 some error
number? Is some "folder" within your message store "opening" inside of
Outlook (i.e., Outlook is showing a folder named "1030" amongst your
Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items, and other normal folder hierarchy within your
message store)?
When you look in the Internet Options applet in Control Panel, under the
Programs tab panel, is Outlook EXPRESS selected for the news client? After
setting Outlook Express to be the default newsreader, OE may ask if it
should be the default newsreader when you start it. If it does, say no
(and select to always remember your action) so that the "news" function in
Outlook will remain. Of course, you could just start Outlook Express
since that is what Outlook will load, anyway.
If the "news" function in Outlook has not disappeared, just how are you
selecting the news function from within Outlook? And WHICH version of
Outlook? Have you tried running the Detect and Repair function under the
Help menu (in any Office application)? You will need the install CD to do
the repair.
