OE6 seems to indicate in the Folder pane (by means of a value in
parentheses) that the newsgroup contains several thousand messages.

in the preview pane I only see a few hundred items (are these what are
referred to as headers?). Why don't I see the several thousand? I don't

if the messages displayed are downloaded or not (and what does it mean if
they are?)

I haven't been able to find Help to explain what to expect if I click
"Headers" on the toolbar.

Is it possible (is it even practical or recommended) to display

about all messages in the preview pane? Or is the best use of a newsgroup

use "Find" and enter a search argument?

The blue number in the Folders pane is an estimate of the number of messages
not downloaded yet.
Tools | Options | Read has an option telling OE how many headers to download
at a time.
After reading those (or as many as you want to) Tools has an option to
download another bunch.

I think it's best to right click the Folder and select Catch Up. This will
mark everything as read. Then I go to Tools | Options | Read and UNcheck
Download ### headers at a time. Then it will download ALL new headers.
