Default KB918651

Thanks for your reply, Jim.
I wasn't suggesting or intending to use this as a substitute for backing up,
rather as a known, good, and current copy (between back ups) should a
problem occur during compacting.

If you click the Restore operation in the Recycle Bin, the BAK files will
be copied to your existing message store folder. And they are the files
that were existing before the compact begins, so they are probably bloated
in size. You can copy all the *.BAK files moved to the message store
folder to a folder for safekeeping but their main intent is to provide the
ability to recover from a problem, if one should occur during a compacting
operation.

If that were to happen, you would copy all of the *.bak files from the
message store folder to a new folder, then rename them all to have a *.dbx
extension. Then open Outlook Express, selecting File/Import/Messages and
selecting "From a Message Store folder" and pointing the wizard to the
folder in which you placed the renamed *.bak files.

They are not a substitute for regular backup procedures.

I've installed this patch, as well as the REG file generously provided by
Freudi, and all seems to be working well. I especially like the patch's
functions to copy the OE folders to the Recycle Bin as BAK files, and the
resetting of the compact count to zero - I checked to make sure that was
working.
I do have a question though.
I compact daily, and backup OE weekly. If you right click on the BAK
files after compacting you have a "restore" option. If I were to move
these elswhere, then after the following day's compacting delete them and
move the new ones (so that during compacting I would have one set of BAK
files), would this set serve as a backup should a problem occur during
compacting?
The reason I am considering this is that it would be more current than my
weekly backup - not to suggest it would replace backing up.
Thanks
Terry
