I know I can extract the address book to get my 800 contacts into a CSV
file using the export option but .......

I really need to know which group(s) they are in

Is there any way I can achieve this ? are there any utilities out there
that could help me ?

To export a group go to Start | Run and type
wab /new
and save it, giving it the name of the group, keeping the WAB extension.
Now open your group, select one contact and press Ctrl-A to Select All then
Ctrl-C to Copy All.
Go to the new address book, click in the contact area and press Ctrl-V to
Paste All.
