My old laptop died. Well, at least the motherboard died, but the hard
drive is still in tact. I took the drive out of the dead laptop and
it's now the E drive on this new machine.

Thanks to some wonderful people in this group, I was able to transfer
over all the files and folders. Now, I'd really like to move over all
the user accounts and address book entries as well.

Any pointers?


For the user accounts, if you didn't export them to an .AIF file then you
will have to load the hive for the old account into the registry, export
those subkeys then import them into the registry (very carefully because you
currently have an account already set up).

For the addres book, locate the WAB file (*.wab), it's usual location for XP
is C:\Documents and Settings\user profile name)\Application
Data\Microsoft\Address Book

Copy it to the new computer and use File | Import | Address Book


For the accoutns if you didn't import them, here's the info on it:

Close Outlook Express

Locate the NTUSER.dat file for the account, it should be in C:\Documents and
Settings\user profile name


Open Regedit START | Run
press ENTER

Click on HKEY_USERS
File | Load Hive


When prompted for a key name, enter OldAccount
Press OK
Click the + sign next to HKEY_USERS
Click the + sign next to OldAccount
Click the + sign next to Software
Click the + sign next to Microsoft
Click the + sign next to Internet Account Mamager
Click the + sign next to Accounts

Now, notice the 0000000x subkeys. These are the old accounts less the
passwords (those are now history)

You will have to edit the names of them to be able to import them in.

So, click on Accounts
File | Export
Name it Accounts.reg

Navigate back to the HKEY_USERS
Click on OldAccounts
Click on File | Unload Hive
Click Yes


Do not close regedit you still need it open.

Now, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOftware\Microsoft\Internet Account
Manager\Accounts

Notice the 0000000x numbered subkeys. These are the current accounts you
have set up.
Those names will remain the same, the ones you have to change are in the
Accounts.reg file.

If you have two accounts already setup, you will see 00000001 and 00000002
account names.

Change the ones in the .reg file to begin at 00000003 00000004 and so on.

Best bet would be to use WordPad to open and edit the Account.reg file.

Locate the sections for Active Directory, Bigfoot, Verisign and WhoWhere and
delete them. Each are separated so it's easy to find them.

Now you should be left with just the mail and news accounts 000000x values.

If you currently have 00000001 and 00000002 in the registry, rename the
rest in order of 00000003, 00000004 and so on so they do not REPLACE the
current reg subkeys.

Now, save and close the reg file

Now, right click on the .reg file and select Merge

You have now added the accounts back less the password.

Open OE
