Deleting the imap pst was a good tip as it didn't crash since then.

Please help. Outlook 2003 SP2 is crashing most of the time while
trying to contact our local IMAP server with send/receive. It's
crashing hard in outlook.exe, asking to send error report.
Logging is disabled as I googled this as a possible source for
crashes. I reinstalled Outlook with no success and the PST file was
checked with scanpst.exe.
It is not crashing all but most of the time.
