Did you close OE before you tried to shutdown Windows? It's best to
manually close any programs that have files open for updating. Windows
will tell the programs to close during shutdown but might not allow
sufficient time for them to close their data files.
Additionally, OE may be trying to compact folders during OE shutdown.
If you force a Windows shutdown during compacting, you can corrupt your
mail folders.
Starting with XP SP2, OE does a compact every 100 closings. It needs to
complete that without interruption.
In addition to that, some anti-virus programs set to scan e-mail can
prevent OE from closing. As an example, see:
