Default Newsgroup Download Numbers

OK.

I'm running Windows XP SP2. Ever since I upgraded to SP2, I've a problem
with my OE newsreader.

Very often, (OK, most of the time), the newsgroup will say "NNN messages not
downloaded", and show that number in the blue parentheses next to the
newsgroup name, but no matter how many times I click on the Headers button,
no more messages will download.

That's normal. OE is just proving that it can do arithmetic on your computer.

If you want to see how it did its calculation turn on Troubleshooting logging
for News (via Maintenance tab). Recreate your symptom. Turn off logging
and look for a file having the same name as the name that you are using
for that news account and with an extension of .log. It will be in the same
directory that your OE Message Store is in. The data that you are interested
in is the news server's 211 responses to OE's group requests.

The most common instance of this symptom is that the server gives an illogical
"estimate" (e.g. more messages than are possible within the range implied
by the response) and OE dumbly calculates the difference as the number
of messages left to download.

Check it, then ignore it or wait for the server to give a logical estimate.
Neither side is technically wrong, just stupid.
