Short answer, get rid of Norton and don't replace it with McAfee. Both
programs are not suitable with Outlook Express.
I use, and recommend, AVG Free:

or:
http://www.grisoft.com/doc/40/lng/ww
When prompted, choose Custom Installation and *uncheck* e-mail scanning when
you see the option.
Norton, and McAfee, products are not Outlook Express friendly, and I don't
know of any OE-MVP that would recommend using them.
To remove Norton completely:
Commonly used Symantec tools:

Removing NAV 2003 and earlier using Rnav2003.exe.

General precautions for Outlook Express:
Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.
After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.
Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.
Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3
In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.
And backup often.

Been running fine with Norton 2003 (Internet security and system works).
Now I've finally updated to NSW 2006 and NIS 2006.
Not sure which it was, but I think it was the NIS install that seems to
have
really hammered my OE. OE is now VERY slow to load the folders (yeah,
they're kinda large, but they were large before), deleting individual
messages takes several seconds, as does moving from one folder to the
next.
I've done the things Norton suggests, such as a program search in NIS for
internet-connected programs, running Norton's Speed disk. The stuff
that's
in startup needs to be there, and was there before.
Any ideas, other than removing perhaps the Norton Anti-Spam (as that's
where
I think the problem is, but then what to use for anti-spam? MS Defender
does not allow for any anti-spam configurations).
Thanks.
