Default Cannot open address book

I had already checked the entry and it's correct. However, I have found and
fixed the problem. Outlook told me it could run MSMAPI32.dll. I did and
search and it was where it should be. So I ran repair office from the
install CD and now Outlook and Outlook Express are working like they should.
Apparently doing an uninstall on the bad patch corrupted the dll. It's too
bad MS products don't include file names and paths in error messages. And,
ironically this is my second try at posting this message. When I hit post
the first time it errored out and now I'm re-typing it.

Thanks for the help

Is the path to your desired WAB file shown correctly in this key in the
registry:

\HKEY_CURRENT_USER
\Software
\Microsoft
\WAB
\WAB4
\Wab File Name

If the desired WAB file is not shown at that key, modify it to indicate the
correct file path, close regedit and then reopen Outlook Express. See if
that fixes the problem. Review the info at this link for more help:

I did it to the address book in owner and in default. The only others are
the ones in administration and in Windows/System32. However, the one in
owner was the only with that had a current date on it. So, I'm pretty
sure
it's the correct one. Since I posted I ran wab /new from the run command
and
installed a new empty book in the owner directory. After I did that, I
opened OE and now I get the following error: Address Book failed to load.
Outlook Express is incorrectly configured, please reinstall (also wab
couldn't load the one it just created). I deleted the book again and
recreated it using wab from the run command. While the book was still
open,
I imported my saved address book and it worked perfectly. I exited the
program and when I run it again, I get the same message as I get in OE. I
loaded Outlook 2000 to see if it runs and it lets me read the old
messages.
But when it receives message the from is always blank. I'm at my wits
end,
I'm about ready to format the disk and start over. That shouldn't take
more
than 3 days to get back to where I was before all of this started.

Sounds like you did all of this to the wrong Address Book. Search your
hard
drive for *.wab making Search is set to show hidden files and folders.

Yes that's the article I used. It said to save a backup copy, delete
the
real .wab book and then open outlook express and click on tools then
address
book. Which I did and he said 'cannot open address book'. The one on
the
desktop is named backup.wab just like the directions say. However, I
don't
ever get to the place where I can run import.

Hi vjwebb,

Did you rename the copy of the address book saved to the Desktop from
user.wab (replacing user, but keeping the extension)? This needs
to
be
done if you didn't.

Is this KB article what you followed?

After installing patch 911567 I got the address book corrupt message.
Following the MS instructions, I uninstalled 911567. I saved a copy
of
the
..wab file and then deleted the default.wab files. Now I open outlook
express
and click on address book and I get the following message, 'unable to
open
the address book.' So, what do I do now? If I can just get an empty
address
book, at least I can use my email. I can always reenter the
addresses.
