Just to add to this.....
There are a variety of rules that apply to when a contact is "added" versus
being "updated" - those are intrinsic Outlook issues. That's something
that few people like to discuss (or just maybe not aware of) and makes the
"add/update" process a very difficult process especially if "performance"
comes into play. Also - some of the Outlook fields dynamically change
depending on what data gets altered.

I saw someone else post this question but they never answered the follow up
questions!
I am importing a list of names and addresses into a contact folder. The
list is a CSV file that includes company names. I have my default "file
as"
set for Company (Last name, first name) but once the list is imported,
they
show up as Last Name, First Name. I have well over 2000 names and I'd
rather
not have to go one by one updating the contacts to my prefered display
settings.
Is there a way to import these using my default "file as" settings?
