Not true. IMAP accounts leave messages on the server. Outlook
creates a local copy of the messages, but it does not remove them
from the server unless you explicitly delete and purge the messages.

The real answer is that for Outlook prior to Outlook 2007, you must create a
rule that moves a copy of the message to the IMAP Sent Items folder for
outgoing messages.
