Yep. The number in the Status Bar, (lower left), is the correct count. This
begs two questions.

Do you have that many friends? If this is for a business, you may want to
check out other options for an e-mail client.

Do you use any form of Instant Messaging? If you don't, IMHO, there is no
reason to use the Contacts Pane.
