Archive folders

What is the purpose of having archive folders.(ex.notes in archive f. tasks
in archive f. calendar...)
What will be the difference if i put task in the archive folder.
Why outlook offers this option?

Archive folders

Your archive is usually where older items are moved after a certain amount
of time. It's a good idea to have one since PSTs tend to be more stable when
they're smaller. If you close the archive PST those entries will 'go away'.
