It there a way to permanently keep the calendar open while working in the
Inbox?

Outlook - Open Calendar
 

Right-click the Calendar folder and click "Open in New Window".

Thank you JF, however, that takes me out of the Inbox and puts me in the
Calendar. I phrased my question incorrectly, I would like to see an open
calendar while viewing my emails and while writing responding in order to see
dates without having to open/close or minimize/maximize any windows.

Outlook - Open Calendar
 

If Outlook is the only application open and you have the calendar opened in
a new window, right click in your Windows taskbar and select to Tile the
windows.
