any chance there is a way to gerry-rig the '07 calendar into showing a
timeline view, ala Gantt chart? The 'scheduler' in the appointment setup
clearly has the capability, but not clear if/how possible to do that as a
separate view of the calendar.

No, it's not possible. Only if you use Microsoft Project.

You can use the timeline view that is often used in the journal, but its not
remotely close the the scheduling view and it doesn't support multiple or
overlay calendars.
