inbox emails

All the emails in inbox have disappeared for some totally unknown reason.
If I go Identities/microsoft/OE I have Inbox.dbx 137KB and Inbox.dbx.bak
7.338KB (which I didn't create) so I still have emails.
Deleted Inbox.dbx and try to change backup file to .dbx. It wont let me.
How do I remedy this situation?
With thanks for any help.

I don't know of any OE process that would create files named
"Inbox.dbx.bak". Sounds like something someone did manually.

If OE gets into trouble and creates a new DBX file, the old one gets a
number add to the name in parentheses such as Inbox (2).dbx. If the
compacting process has a problem, you get a DBT file such as Inbox.dbt.

As for renaming files, you can't do that with OE open. And I wouldn't
mess with the Inbox directly. Instead create a new user folder in OE
and work with that. If you get the mails there, you can always move
them to the folder that you want.
