Every time I close down OE I get the following message:
"Outlook Express ! To free up disk space, Outlook express can compact messages. This may take up to a few minutes. OK Cancel" I have searched through tools and accounts to try and find reference to it without success. Help please to get rid. Thanks |

Why does OE insist on compacting folders when I close it?:
http://www.insideoe.com/faqs/why.htm#compact Compacting your folders periodically is a must to keep OE functioning well and at some point, you may lose all your saved messages if you don't. When you delete messages, they are only marked for deletion and the space they had used, remains until you compact, or the space is eventually overwritten. See: www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2 With SP2, automatic background compacting was removed due to problems it caused. Now you will get a prompt to compact after 100 OE closings, which you should do and don't touch anything until it has finished. See this for more information: http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact To keep things running smooth, and for faster compacting: Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt and you may lose mail. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. And this is a very good option: Steve Cochran has added a button in his new version of OE Tool that will not only Compact All Folders, but at the same time, resets the "Compact Check Count" to zero whenever you compact manually. You will see the prompt again if you do not compact before 100 closings. http://www.oehelp.com/OETool/ You should still check: Work Offline before you compact. And backup often. Backup and Resto http://www.insideoutlookexpress.com/backup/ http://www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx http://www.oehelp.com/OEBackup/Default.aspx If you don't have the current version, you can reset the counter to 0, (zero). Go to: StartRunRegeditOK and find this key. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID for Identity}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0. In the right hand pane and find *Compact Check Count* and set the value to 0, (zero). This will reset the prompt, and you won't see it again for another 100 closings. However, if you do not compact your folders from time to time, you stand a good chance of your .dbx files becoming corrupt and very possibly lose your messages. You will be posting back at some time asking, "Why are my saved e-mails missing?" If you want to take that chance, it's your choice. Good luck. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "AT and HMB" wrote in message ... Every time I close down OE I get the following message: "Outlook Express ! Compacting is a helpful function that consolidates your email messages and
news posts to free up space on your hard disk. Windows automatically offers to do this every 100th time (I believe) you close Outlook Express, or you can do it manually at any time. As Martha Stewart likes to say "This is a good thing." For more information on compacting, see he "Why does OE insist on compacting folders when I close it? Perhaps I should have mentioned that I do compact regularly (after
off-lining). Likewise I also copy my email partition to another one immediately before compacting. My request was just about getting rid of the reminder which for some reason comes up every time (even after I have just finished compacating). Thanks. "Ted Zieglar" wrote in message ... If you use it to compact, it will reset the counter to zero and you'll never see that message again. http://www.oehelp.com/OETool/ That new feature of SP2 is dangerous. If you lose power and it's the 100th time, bye, bye messages. Alias "Ted Zieglar" wrote in message ... QP
My request was just about getting rid of the reminder which for some reason comes up every time (even after I have just finished compacting). /QP You can't get rid of it. But as I stated in my original reply, and as Alias has reiterated, if you use OETool to compact, it will reset the counter to zero. So if you compact more often than 100 closings, you *won't* see the prompt again. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "AT and HMB" wrote in message ... Or you can manually go into the Registry and set the value to 0.

I use IE SP1 and do not get this message. Also I do not have *Compact Check
