Tackling OE spam in my name

Hello. Spam messages appear to be going out from my OE account to a random
variety of addresses. The "From" part of the messages employ the second part
of my e-mail address ) but the first part is usually just a
jumble of random numbers.

These messages are either going to random non-existent addresses or they are
being blocked by spam filters. Either way they bounce back to me and I am
sick of it.

Is there any way I can stop these messages being sent?

Also, I have been thinking of cancelling my OE account since I rarely use it
for genuine mail (99% of my Inbox is spam) and I use a web-based e-mail
program for most of my mail needs. How exactly do you cancel an OE account?

Many thanks

JOHN

You are not the source
someone who has your email address in their address book is infected
and using randomly generated names based on domains in the address book, and
your name as the reply to address
there isnt much you can do about it

Those can be one of 4 things:
1) Some spammer is sending the original messages and using your e-mail
address as the sender.
2) Someone else has a PC infected with a virus and the virus is sending
itself as the original message and using your e-mail address as the
sender.
3) The message is the virus itself, pretending to be a returned mail.
4) Your PC is infected with a virus and it has been sending itself. And
this is really a returned mail that your PC sent.

In cases 1, 2, and 3 above, the messages are not coming from your PC and
are not going through your e-mail account. There's nothing you can do
to prevent anyone from sending an e-mail with your e-mail address as the
From header, just as you can't prevent anyone from sending a postal mail
and putting your name and address as the return address. At this point
all you can do is filter out the messages. Your ISP may offer some
filtering at the mail server.

To make sure that case 4 above is not the cause, you should check your
PC with an updated anti-virus program.

As for Canceling an OE account, OE doesn't own accounts. It is merely a
program for reading mail. If you have 2 different e-mail addresses (one
that you've been reading via some web mail and one via OE), then contact
the supplier of the mail account that you read via OE and see how you go
about canceling that.

Once you've done that either stop using OE, or if you want to continue
to use it for newsgroups, then in Tools, Accounts, Mail Remove the mail
account. In the latter case, you may want to run OE in a news-only
mode
Command Line Options for Outlook Express
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=177233

If you've been using OE to access the same e-mail address that you use
via web mail, then there is nothing to cancel on the mail service side.
Just remove the OE mail account as mentioned above.
