Oh, my! IE6 (SP1) comes with OE6 (SP1), not OE5.5. Why didn't you just
download it all from

via Windows Update?

OE Help about: What version is displayed here (e.g., 5.50.1234.5678)?

OE Help About Files: What versions of MSOE.DLL and INETCOMM.DLL are
displayed here?

(This download also downloaded and installed [no choice] Advanced
Searchbar that then appeared at the top of my IE window. I scanned the
downloaded setup.exe using Norton Antivirus with no hits. I also scanned
my computer after the IE 6 download and it came up clean. After the
install, I located and removed the Advanced Searchbar using Add/Remove
Programs.)

You might have gotten much more than you bargained for, especially after
seeing this page:
http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/win...s.com?aff_id=0 !! Chances
are that other hijackware/spyware persists on the machine. Understand that
Home/Small Office editions of Norton AntiVirus (NAV) do not detect such
things.

Your original problem was most likely caused by the install of KB911567.
Uninstalling it probably would've fixed it, or see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917288/ (ignore the title).

article states that a number of steps must be followed to completely
remove OE before the original version (5.5) is reloaded. Once I had
carefully completed all the removal steps it told me to go to Control
Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup tab, to check the box next to
Outlook Express and then click Apply. This reinstalled OE 5.5.
4. With IE 6 and OE 6 removed and IE 5.5 and OE 5.5 reinstalled, I could
again use my Outlook 2000 to send mail.

Thanks for your reply. I believe I may have seen the MS IE6 download page you
referenced but I thought it was an upate for IE6 to get SP1 not IE6 including
SP1. I'm not a full-time computer guy and was doing the best I knew how.
Thanks for the info on the siteadvisor website. I'm not familiar with the
site and therefore did not check it. You are probably correct in that I have
downloaded more than I wanted. I have just dumped all my Temporary Internet
Files and Cookies and I ran Ad-Ware to find the spyware, etc. Will Ad-Ware
find it all? It found, and I deleted, 1 RegKey and 7 RegValue "Critical
Objects." They were Alexa data miners with a TAC of 5. Do you recommend that
I uninstall the garbage I downloaded (even though everything appears to be
working) and reinstall from the MS IE6 site you referenced? If I went back to
my original 5.5 versions of both would Windows Update upgrade both to 6?

up your personal data, /formatting/ and reinstalling WinME.

I think it'd be best to leave you in the hands of the experts in WinME

Outlook Express is not listed in my Windows Setup Tab window. I cannot
unclick the box to uninstall it because it is not listed. Now what?

I have learned that the OE version I have (that is corrupt) is OE 6. I
also have IE 6. Perhaps I'll try to download IE 6 and OE 6.

Otherwise you'd have to install IE5 which includes OE5. And
that's going to be a mess. It's not even an option for newer
versions of Windows which came with IE6.

Why do you need OE 5? If you have some data files from OE5, OE6
can read them
