OE locks up with invalid POP3 and SMTP servers

I tried to add a new identity with a new account, but when I entered the
POP3 and the SMTP servers, I mistakenly enter the "@" sign instead of a dot
sign. Although OE warned me that the servers were invalid, I was just too
fast and saved the settings by mistake. Now when I start OE, it will just
hang.

1) How can I completely remove the invalid identity and the invalid account
and get back to the default one?
2) Is there any way of fixing the wrong names without deleting the identity?

The PC is running Windows 98SE and IE has been upgraded to IE6 SP1 several
months ago. Please help!

OE locks up with invalid POP3 and SMTP servers

Hi Jimmy,

I don't know how to edit the account information, or if it's possible. An OE
Identity can be removed using the Registry editor. It would be possible to
identify the problem identity and remove the Registry key -- and the
Identity.

From a Microsoft KB Article

To regenerate the Identities registry key:
1.Click the Start button, click Run, and then type regedit. Click OK.
2.Browse through the registry to the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Identities
3.On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.
4.In the Save In box, click Desktop.
5.In the File Name box, type Identities, and then click Save.
6.In Registry Editor, right-click the Identities key, and then click Delete.
7.Quit Registry Editor, and then start Outlook Express to test
functionality.

You can now restore your mail, addresses, and account settings.

In the event that multiple Identities exist on your system, use the
following steps to determine the GUID number (such as the one displayed
above {114378F3-CC8A-4992-B5B4-CCEA0A42A2B6} as an example):
1.Click Start, click Run,type regedit, and then click OK.
2.Browse through the registry to the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Identities
3.Click the "+" (plus sign) next to Identities.
4.To determine which GUID belongs to which Identity, click the GUID on the
left side window. In the right side window, look for the data name "User
Name" - this is the name of the Outlook Express Identity.

1. In each good identity go to Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Root
and write down the {GUID} (the big, long alphanumeric number).

2. Close OE.

3. Go to Start | Run and type
regedit
and press Enter.

4. In the left pane navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities and click the
plus sign in front of it.

5. You will see a list of {GUID}s. Right click the one you did not write
down and select Delete.

Did you ever find out what caused the winsock2 problem?

No, I couldn't figure that out yet. I suspected there were some conflicts
among the registry keys. Anyway, since the fixup, IE6 and OE6 have been
working fine.

By the way, the identity problem below occurred on a different PC. Thank you
anyway.

Thank you for your help. The problem seems to have been solved by deleting
the identity on the registry.

By the way, I tried to edit the POP3 and SMTP server settings on the
registry by modifying the "@" sign with a dot sign, but still it didn't work
(even after I rebooted the PC.)
