Outlook Express runs without .exe
 

I use XP Professional at work with my work email on Outlook using Exchange.
I recently configured Outlook Express to run my personal POP mail through a
Plaxo application. I cannot find the .exe file (msimn.exe) anywhere in my
operating system. But when I do a run... command from the start menu it
boots right up. How can this be? I want to shortcut Outlook Express to my
desktop but have not been able to find the .exe, even in the Outlook Express
folder. I also tried to write a .bat file with the single command line
"msinm" in it which failed to do anything. Can anyone help me on this one?

In windows explorer settings, make sure that "Hide file extensions for known
file types" is unchecked, make certain "show all files" is checked,
the first makes MSIMN.EXE - appear as msimn in directory lists, the second
if unchecked Hides read only and system files so you cant see them.
my version of outllook express resides here "C:\Program Files\Outlook
Express\MSIMN.EXE"

An easy way to do this (most of the time you can do this without showing
hidden files, file extensions, or showing system files, but don't hold me to
that) is to do the following:
1.) Click Start - Search - Files and Folders.
2.) Search for "MSIMN" (I don't think it's case-sensitive, but don't hold me
to that - I think you can tell it to be)
3.) Notice the icon that shows in the search results - if it's an
application, it should either have the standard "application" icon image or
it would look like the Outlook Express icon (the little envelope encircled by
the blue arrows). If more than one comes up, switch to detail view (View -
Details), then see what folder/path said item resides in. It should match
closely (if not exactly) %SYSTEMROOT%/Program%20Files/Outlook%20Express/
(where %20 = {space} and %SYSTEMROOT% = your default system drive).
Right-click on the icon that matches the closest to said path and select
Send to - Desktop (create shortcut).

You might also want to be sure you have given access to this program by
running the "Set Program Access and Defaults" item from your Start Menu (if
installed and showing it), and you might also want to double-check your
Internet Options in the control panel to be sure the default Mail client is
properly set.
