Someone just sent me several .jpg images. They open OK from the Attach
window, but usually they show up in the body of the e-mail. I haven't
changed any settings, but I can't remember where to look to make sure that
they DO show in the e-mail itself.

Yes, but when I send, say, a photo attachment to a friend, it appears in the
body of the e-mail. I'm not clear why this would be different.

Bruce, there wasn't any message body other than a brief comment about the
pictures. But no pictures after that. And no, I hadn't done anything to

What do you consider the Attach Window? The paper clip?

If they were sent as attachments, they should be after the message body,
regardless how big it was, and there should be a thin gray line between the
message body and the attachment.

Were these pix sent to you by an AOL user? If so, and they were forwarded,
then you have to click on the attachment code in the header for as many
times as it has been forwarded.

This is a canned message of mine regarding this:

If they are from an AOL or Compuserve user, (some other servers are changing
too), they may be layered as many times as it has been forwarded. When you
open an attachment and only see a blank page, keep putting the cursor on the
text in the attachment line / Right click / Open, or double click. Keep
doing this and you'll eventually get to the original attachment and be able
to view it.

You can also highlight the message header and press Ctrl & F3 to just read
the text of the message.

When I send a .jpg attachment, yes, in Create Mail I click on the paper clip
that also has the word Attach. :When I'm referring to what I received,
under the From-Date-To-Subject, is Attach with a window and that's where he
had all those .jpgs.

No, he doesn't have AOL or Compuserve, he has Comcast and I don't know what
e-mail format or program he uses. I did ask him about these pics, though,
after I asked my question in this NG, and he said he sent them that way,
i.e. NOT in the body of the e-mail.

So, thanks, but it seems I didn't have any problem on my end, it's just that
he sent them that way.

HTML = [Insert][ Picture][browse] inserts the image into the body at that point

Joy, I am trying to puzzle out the same issue. Let me use my own words. On
my machine if I send an e-mail with a picture attached, the recipient, when

picture. On another similar computer system, when the recipient opens the
e-mail, only the text shows. The recipient must click on the picture file
icon in the "attachment" line to open the picture. My question: what
adjustment is making the difference in response?

Plain text messages with attached images in OE (when not with it set to read
messages in plain text only) will display the images at the bottom of the
message. I think if you set OE to read in plain text only, then it won't do
this. Similarly, there is a registry hack the user can make to change this
behavior, but that blocks the ability to read messages in plain text only.

You're right about that. Maybe that option was removed by SP2. I haven't
checked it in a long time. Hopefully someone will have an answer.

In the meanwhile, I noticed from your headers that you are running an
outdated version of OE. I would visit Windows Updates ASAP and download at
least the critical patches.

Since you don't have the registry key, that's not your issue.

If you have set Tools, Options, Read, Read All Messages in Plain Text,
images will not automatically show.

For a quick workaround for the current message, press ALT+Shift+H

Went there and it is primarily specific to IE (with which I have no issue).
did do a few of the mentioned suggestions but to no avail. The primary
direction of concern would seem to be that the images are somehow linked to
a website and that the website is down, broken or blocked from access.
However, since the image does exist as an attachment, that would not seem to
be the case. I did all of the settings things and since it is there as an
attachment, the image has not been stripped from the email.

If the images are in fact linked to a website, they may or may not be
attached. Many users work offline if they are including images linked to a
website so that the images do not increase the overall file size.

You would have to look at the HTML coding (highlight the message and press
Ctrl+F2) or forward it after setting your options to use Plain Text and to
not reply using format in which sent. In that case, images that are in fact
attached, will appear in the line just below the Subject.

As far as references to IE, please remember that OE uses the rendering
engine for HTML messages that is part of IE.

I seemingly have the same issue as that descrived below. An email with
jpg's is not displaying thei mages, only an empty box with the little red
'x' in the corner. If I change the settings to Plain Text only, I get a
link there instead of a box. Yet, if I click on the jpg file in the
attachment box, it opens up properly (in Photo Editor, in this case).

Is there a different problem at work here. Thanks, Lar

Wow...I've tested what you said and your advice is certainly correct!
It will be a couple of days until I can get at the other machine to
check out the settings. I hope it is this simple. Thank you very much.

Plain text messages with attached images in OE (when not with it set
to read messages in plain text only) will display the images at the
bottom of the message. I think if you set OE to read in plain text
only, then it won't do this. Similarly, there is a registry hack the
user can make to change this behavior, but that blocks the ability to
read messages in plain text only.

Joy, I am trying to puzzle out the same issue. Let me use my own
words. On my machine if I send an e-mail with a picture attached, the
recipient, when he opens the e-mail, see the text I have written
followed by the opened picture. On another similar computer system,
when the recipient opens the e-mail, only the text shows. The
recipient must click on the picture file icon in the "attachment"
line to open the picture. My question: what adjustment is making the
difference in response?

Someone just sent me several .jpg images. They open OK from the
Attach window, but usually they show up in the body of the e-mail.
I haven't changed any settings, but I can't remember where to look
to make sure that they DO show in the e-mail itself.
