question about avoiding virus in OE input mail
 

Several times my cox security virus software has given me an alert saying
that it detected a virus in temp internet files (while I was looking at my
mail). I deleted my temp files and the problem disappeared and a scan
showed no virus in my computer.. I only open mail that I know reasonable
certain is safe from know senders. I was wondering if in OE the preview of
a mail is actually allowing a virus all it needs to do damage to my
computer? Yolanda

Could be that one of the web pages on the internet y'all looked at
prior to or while checking the mail was infected.
I rather doubt if OE preview would be the source of the infection if
the e-mail was not opened and y'all did not open an attachment. The OE
files are stored in: tools-options-store folder.

Earlier versions of MS Outlook Express were susceptible to viral
infection if email was viewed in the preview pane. I don't know about
the latest version; I turned off the preview pane a long time ago, and
don't miss it.

They fixed that susceptibility to viruses when viewing messages in the
Preview pane a long time ago, before OE6.

At that time Outlook Express extracts the attachment from the message and saves it to the Temporary Internet Files folder on your hard disk and attempts to open the file. If you manually open an attachment in OE, a copy gets placed in the
Temporary Internet Files (TIF).

The other way that OE can places files in the TIF is if you are viewing
HTML format messages. Images and content from the message would go to
the TIF. Images should be safe. As for other content, make sure that
OE is running in the Restricted Zone (Tools, Options, Security). You
can also set OE to Read All Messages In Plain Text (Tools, Options,
Read).
