Default Compacting folders

Just before Windows closes down I get the following message:
To free up disk space OE can compact messages. This may take up to a few
minutes.
OK Cancel

I usually compact messages manually once a week. Is there any way to turn
this off or should I just ignore it?

TIA
jim

If you are fully patched, the Compact Check Count in the registry should now
be reset to 0 (zero) when you compact manually. Double check at Windows
Updates. If there is nothing available, download the patch at this link and
a manual compact will reset the counter so you don't see the prompt.

I don't see 918766 listed in Add/Remove. There's nothing new at Windows
Update. What is the registry key again for the count down to see if it's
been downloaded or not?

Thanks,

Alias

Go to: StartRunRegeditOK and find this key.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID for Identity}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook
Express\5.0. In the right hand pane and find *Compact Check Count* and set
the value to 0, (zero).

Then there is an optional update for OE waiting for you at Windows Update.

Note to others: You must be running WinXP SP2 for this update.

I lost it. I knew right where it was stored, but there was a glitch in the
MS newsgroups and the email is gone. I hope Steve or Jim or Bruce or
Vincent or one of the other regulars will jump in with the article number.
I'll save it better this time.

WindowsXP-KB918766-v2-x86-ENU.exe

I downloaded it and it does, indeed, set the counter back to zero with a
manual compaction. However, it also backs up the folders which gives it
a new little window that is named "copying" that pops up when it hits a
large .dbx file. I wonder to where it copies them?
