Every rule has an Apply Now button. That said, IMHO, it is a waste of time.
It is quicker to click on one message in the Preview Pane and then Ctrl+A will highlight them all. Left click on the messages and just drag them to the folder you created to save Sent messages. You're done in ten seconds. Automatic rules only apply to incoming mail. Your questions about MS Outlook or Eudora would have to be addresses in a forum for those e-mail clients. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "iweb" wrote in message ... Hi,
So then is MS Outlook a better option than Outlook express? Can Outlook accept more emails than OE? Are corruption chances lesser with Ms Outlook than OE? Akshay. In my experience, 8,000 to 10,0000 messages are way too many for Outlook
to handle gracefully. Having a large number of message in a folder, especially in the Inbox, can slow operations greatly. I use Outlook at work because I must, and OE at home, by choice. I've never experienced data corruption with either, so I can't say anything about the relative chances. iweb wrote: So then is MS Outlook a better option than Outlook express? " mac" wrote in message ... "iweb" wrote in message ... Hi, I have around 8000 plus emails in my Outlook Express 6 Inbox and around 10000 plus in the Sent Items. I use an IBM thinkpad P4 CPU with Windows 2000 Server as the OS. Many a times while searching mails or opening the Inbox I get an in sufficient memory error and only 4000 or 6000 mails are displayed. Have to re start the machine for all mails from the Inbox to be displayed. Would like to know the following: 1) Why is this happening? Is this a hardware, software or OS error? 2) whats the solution, can outlook express handle this large size of emails or should i migrate to MS Outlook? 3) Can i set a Message rule that all messages I send automatically get copied to a new folder which will reduce new mails in the Very huge Sent Items folder? Please guide. Kind Regards, Akshay. To answer your Questions: 1) User error. That's extreme. The error is that OE can't handle the huge amount of information, so the user needs to be aware of that, but don't blame the user for not knowing ahead of time, as OE gives no warning as to its limitations. steve |

OE has its limitations. The really big limitation is no dbx file can exceed
2 gigabytes and when you reach that, the file gets corrupt and unreadable and no messages can be recovered without a 3rd party extraction program. But the problems can occur even before you get close to that size. OE in its current manifestation was written in 1997, and no one imagined the huge volume of emails and attachments that can bloat the message store, so when it gets really big in a folder, that folder can easily become corrupted (one byte change in the file can make it completely unreadable by OE). So the guidline of 100 megs per folder began as my recommendation from experience with testing large folders, and at that size you are likely to have no problems. But above that size (very roughly), once can see sluggishness of performance and an apparent greater tendency towards corruption. So its better to parse the messages into smaller size folders. That said, my sent items is currently 211 megs (yeah, I need to archive it and start with an empty one), but I also backup with triple redundancy almost daily with a single button click using OETool and OEQB (both free see www.oehelp.com/OETool/). I also redundantly download all my mail on another machine. The other factors that contribute to the lack of stability of the message store are compaction problems, which are reduced in newly released patches (see www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2) and interference from other programs such as antivirus and antispam software that was not properly tested with OE and is known to cause problems in functionality as well as massive message loss (see www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3). So if you want huge folder sizes, then #1 backup frequently (which you should do anyway to prepare for when the hard drive fails) and #2 get rid of any 3rd party software that could interfere with OE. That should also save you the cost of DBXpress. G Hope that helps explain things a bit more. steve "iweb" wrote in message ... Hi, So then is MS Outlook a better option than Outlook express? Hi Steve,
Then for a huge amount of data and emails, do you suggest I should migrate to MS Outlook as its an Enterprise kind of Environment. Pls guide. Akshay.
