OE 6.00.2900.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)
XP Pro Version 2002 SP2 I'm having stability problems with OE6 after an install of SP2 and the other recent batch of XP security patches from Microsoft. I'm seeing a couple of different behaviors: 1) When switching identities, OE can crash during the switch. If I attempt to restart it, OE will say another instance is already running. I will have to kill msimn.exe before I can restart OE. 2) If OE doesn't crash when switching identities, then at some point fairly soon I will be unable to open a message. Several dialogs will open when this happens, concluding with an insufficient memory dialog. I will have to exit OE and, again, kill msimn.exe before I can restart OE and open a few messages before the problem re-occurs. It's acting like a memory leak of some sort, but I can't find any support or KB entries for this problem on the MS support pages. Any help appreciated. I don't want to switch mail clients if I don't have to! |

If this happened immediately after installing SP2 and its updates, was your
anti-virus running when you downloaded SP2? The can often prevent a clean install. Remove SP2 via Add/Remove Programs, (the updates will be removed at that time automatically). If it is working well now, download SP2 again with your A/V disabled. Also have it disabled when you download the updates again. Run a Defrag after you're done. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Simple Simon" wrote in message .. . Order a free SP2 CD and see if you and get it to work that way. Something is preventing a clean install. Free SP2 CD: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...s/default.mspx OK, I've ordered the CD. Hopefully now there's only 4-6 more weeks of this baloney. Thanks for your assistance, Bruce. -- One nation, under surveillance. |

I was able to get OE6 to behave itself:
From Bruce Hagen's suggestions: 1) uninstalled SP2 2) turned off anti-virus 3) reinstalled SP2 4) reinstalled latest MS XP patches 5) defragmented drive 6) turned on anti-virus When that didn't solve the issue: 7) noticed that a few OE mailboxes were listed as "unable to defragment" in the defrag report ([5], above) 8) created a couple of folders and filtered messages out of those mailboxes to make them smaller 9) let OE compact its files 10) Voila! Stability restored. 11) ran defrag again, just for grins Thanks Bruce. Hope this helps someone else with this problem. -- One nation, under surveillance. |
