Bruce, links are still not working, still have to go through the URL edit
procedure every logon. One thing I noticed, in the setting for "Application used to perform this action" I have "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome %1. OK, Bruce. I took out the trailing %1 and rebooted. All was good, links
opened correctly. I rebooted again, no joy. Had to re-edit the URL, and the trailing %1 was back in there again. What is that %1 for, and why does it keep replacing itself? (I feel as confident as possible that I have no malware). Based on what I've seen so far, if I could make that setting stick, i.e. without the trailing %1, my problem would be solved. What's putting that trailing %1 back in that line? Anybody got any ideas of what else I might try? Should I start this in the XP newsgroup instead of pursuing it here? Thanks. I honestly don't know what the %1 is for, since it shouldn't be in there.
You may, or may not have Malware or one of it's "friends", but something outside of OE is causing this to reoccur. Did you reregister the .dlls? Probably not the answer, but it won't cause any harm to try. Yes, since my last post, I reregistered the DLL's as you suggested, and I
went back to the file types, and entered everything by hand, except I browsed to Iexplore.exe (to let that path put itself in). I had to add the -nohome. Then after rebooting, it had the mysterious %1 appended again. I'll try the XP newsgroup and se if I can get any help with the %1 question. Thanks for your help Bruce. You're welcome. Good luck and I would like to hear what the final resolution
is for the future. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Larry" wrote in message ... Yes, since my last post, I reregistered the DLL's as you suggested, and I went back to the file types, and entered everything by hand, except I browsed to Iexplore.exe (to let that path put itself in). I had to add the -nohome. Then after rebooting, it had the mysterious %1 appended again. I'll try the XP newsgroup and se if I can get any help with the %1 question. Thanks for your help Bruce. Larry "Bruce Hagen" wrote in message ... I honestly don't know what the %1 is for, since it shouldn't be in there. You may, or may not have Malware or one of it's "friends", but something outside of OE is causing this to reoccur. Did you reregister the .dlls? Probably not the answer, but it won't cause any harm to try. The only other thing I can suggest at this point is: Courtesy of Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Security, Shell/User) Checking for/Help with Hijackware http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=5878 http://wiki.castlecops.com/Malware_R...:_Introduction http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/data/prevention.htm http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/tshoot.html http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/Malware_Defence.htm http://defendingyourmachine.blogspot.com/ http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use. OK, Bruce. I took out the trailing %1 and rebooted. All was good, links opened correctly. Thanks. Larry "Bruce Hagen" wrote in message ... There should be nothing after - iexplore.exe" -nohome - See the attached screen shot which shows the correct settings. If you still have problems: Try re-registering these dlls: Start | Run | type, or Copy/Paste, these in one at a time and try again. (Note the space in each command). regsvr32 Mshtml.dll regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll regsvr32 Shell32.dll regsvr32 actxprxy.dll regsvr32 shdocvw.dll regsvr32 urlmon.dll In IE, go to: ToolsInternet OptionsPrograms. Click: Reset Web Settings - (uncheck box for homepage) - Click Yes. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Larry" wrote in message ... Bruce, links are still not working, still have to go through the URL edit procedure every logon. One thing I noticed, in the setting for "Application used to perform this action" I have "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome %1. In your earlier reply, the trailing %1 is not there. What's it do? I notice there's a %1 in the first box below. Does it do the same thing? Thanks. Larry "Larry" wrote in message news:... Bruce, thanks for your help. And I'm gladder than you that I didn't have to get in deeper. Appreciate your assistance. Larry "Bruce Hagen" wrote in message ... It is one of a few ways to repair IE/OE. Sometimes that will fix problems like yours and sometimes a more drastic repair may be needed. If at all possible, we try to do the simplest fixes first, even if we believe a more complicated fix may be needed, such as a reinstall of IE/OE. (Try the easy things first). Glad it's fixed and you didn't have to get in deeper. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Larry" wrote in message ... Bruce, the Frank Saunders page that you suggested referenced a Sandi Hardmeier page, i.e. http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers/26.html . It suggested repairing IE. I went to Control Panel add/remove windows components. That brought up a Wizard, I highlighted Internet Explorer, clicked Next. Question: Was that a repair? It seems to have fixed my problem of the URL edits not sticking. Make sense? Larry "Bruce Hagen" wrote in message ... Your Main Identity is the most likely one to become corrupt. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Larry" wrote in message ... OK, I thought maybe there was something *special* about Main Identities, and that they should remain. I don't have any idea how I got so many of them, I'll delete them if they're *not* special. Larry "Bruce Hagen" wrote in message ... Delete any identities you are not using. Make a mental note of the folders you have in your currently used identities for verification, and then: In Regedit, navigate to this key: |--HKEY_CURRENT_USER |-----Identities. Click on each one and continue to: |--------{GUID} |-----------Software |--------------Microsoft |-----------------Outlook Express |--------------------5.0 When you see any that are obviously not being used, go back to Identities and right click and delete that identity. This is something you should do, but it is not the remedy for your current problem. Do hyperlinks not work in any identity? I still think you should try a new one if they don't work as long as you have tried all other possible fixes already. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Larry" wrote in message ... No, the URL edits don't stick. You had suggested I create a new identity, I haven't done that yet. I'll try the other things in the Frank Saunders link you provided. I've got a question about identities. When I go to Manage Identities, I see 5 listed. One each for the two users (my wife and I), two Main Identity and a Main Identity(2). Does that make sense? Should I delete some? Larry "Bruce Hagen" wrote in message ... And this doesn't work / stick? From: http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm If nothing happens when you click a link: Open Windows Explorer. Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types. Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol (NOT URL:Internet Shortcut) and select it. Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version. Select 'open'. Click Edit. "Application used to perform this action" should read: "C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome (Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the double quotes.) DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have: #1: "%1",,-1,0,,,, #2 IExplore #3 (blank) #4 WWW_OpenURL URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.
