Default Copying while Compacting

I downloaded KB918766 to automate the registry counter reset after manual
compacting. Everything seemed to work fine, except I noticed that during the
compacting a Copying window popped up from time to time. Is that normal
behavior? I had never seen that before I downloaded the Hotfix. Thanks.

Yes, because it is copying a file to the Recycle Bin, changing the file name
from DBX to BAK. This is so that if the compacting screws up you will have
a backup.

Thanks Robear. Is that KB article telling me that the copying I saw going on
was corrupt files being backed up, or just files being backed up in case
they are corrupt? Should I be restoring those .bak files I find in the
recycle bin?

If all is well in OE, just empty the recycle bin.

They are all being backed up, period. Corruption has nothing to do with it.
When you compact your folders, should you disrupt the compacting by using
your computer, or shutting it down, you may lose messages. This is just a
safety precaution that was long overdo. You don't have to restore anything,
unless you lose messages.

OK, I can do that. That's also the way I interpreted Frank Saunder's
response.....BUT when I read KB918069 that Robear sent, I read "....If more
than one file is corrupted, you may have to restore more than one file. When
this occurs, the Recycle Bin contains more than one mail_folder_name.bak
file." I interpreted that to mean I'd find a backup for each corrupt file. I
just went back and reread KB918069 and notice it says "...After the database
is successfully compacted, the backup copy of the .dbx file is moved to the
Recycle Bin." So this says there's always a backup made, even if there's no
corruption. Well, I just checked my recycle bin, and it's empty, and I
haven't emptied it since I compacted. So, does it always leave a backup
after compacting? If so, what happened to mine?

With 918766 installed, all DBX files are backed up during automatic or
manual compacting for safety's sake. If all is well after compacting, empty
the Recycle Bin.

Yes.
It's from this update:
There are two articles, KB918766 and KB918651, but the latter is not
currently available. The download link is
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

It places the backup in Recycled, overwriting any earlier backup of the
sane folder(s). To use it, copy it to the store folder, delete the one you
want to replace and then rename the BAK file to DBX. (It's a bit more
complicated if the messed up DBX file isn't there or contains messages that
are hew that you want to keep.
