Block images
 

I have turned on 'block display of images and other external content in html
email'. However I noticed that inline display of images from mail in the
inbox is only actually suppressed if I select 'read all messages in plain
text'. How is this meant to work?
I'm using OE6 with XP SP2.

Some HTML spam contains a sneaky feature that verifies your address just by
viewing the page. It is these types of messages that Block Images is
supposed to block. If the format is such that it doesn't recognize a threat,
the image will not be blocked. In some cases, non-threatening images will be
blocked, bit normally, inserted jpg photos are not blocked.

If you read in Plain Text, you won't see any images.

Is the same logic used when the images are sent as attachments (as opposed
to embedded) ?

Block images
 

Yes and no. JPG and GIF attachments are by default open after the text of a
message. While I have received attachments that required me to click on the
Block Images bar, it is the initial message that spammers use to verify your
address. They usually aren't in the habit of including attachments.

A virus is what you should worry about most with attachments.

The key word in that option is EXTERNAL. It means that the e-mail has a
link to an image on a web server. It does not apply to images included
in the e-mail itself.

Thanks for the replies - all much clearer now. I had been running
(unknowingly) with 'read messages as plain text' set on as well as Block
Images which stopped any image display at all. After a bit of
experimentation I can now see the effect of each setting.
