Had to do a hard restart, OE inbox and sent box is gone
 

my PC froze yesterday, and I had to do a hard restart (hold power button down),
when it restarted, my inbox containing all my saved mail was not in OE, and
neither was the sent box, although my subfolders that I made were there..
After I got an email, both reappeared, but these are new folders...I found
the OE directory, and it looks slike the original inbox and sent box are
still there (there is an inbox.dbx file thre that is 176 mb, the size of my
inbox bfore it went away)...

How can I get these messages restored? I tried doing a system restore to two
days ago and that did not work...

If possible, can you email me replies?

The two most common reasons for what you describe is disruption of the
compacting process, (never touch anything until it's finished), and bloated
folders. More on that below.

A general warning if you don't want to lose your messages in the futu

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupted. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move
your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

And backup often.

Regarding Compacting folders in http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx which you
noted, I just compacted my folders with the proper preparation (because I'm
hounded with the compacting message every time I close OE. After a
relaunch, I went to regedit to turn the number back to 0. As we expect, it
still shows (214) and when I doubleclicked on "Compact Check Count" in the
right pane, it didn't say 214, it said d6. Since it has a lower case
letter with the number, can I go ahead and delete "d6" and enter the zero? I
really expected it to say 214.

I would say that you can change it to zero, although I am not sure how it
ended up d6.

Since you are *almost* fully patched, download this one and unlike now, when
you manually compact, it will reset the counter to zero.

Unsent templates appearing as sent.
Manually compacting will now reset the registry counter to Zero in
WinXP/SP2.

d6 is a hexadecimal number which is equal to 214 in decimal. On the
main screen it probably showed
x000000d6 (214). When you go to edit it, the dialog shows the base
defaulting to hexadecimal.

In any case, 0 is the same in either base.
