Balky Newsgroups Loads
After uninstalling Norton Internet Security, I notice my Newsgroups links on OE
now take up to a minute to load messages, versus about 10 seconds before. I also find that when closing my browser and shutting down, I am now getting a window, End Program - SVCHost, with a progress bar and an [End Now] button. Are these somehow connected? Any suggestions as to how to get back to normal before I decide on and load a different antivirus software? Bruce |

Did you stop NIS before uninstalling, maybe the filtering proxy is still
running because the uninstall could not remove the active parts at the time. You could try reinstall, make sure it is all turned off then uninstall again. NIS is pretty notorious for causing uninstall problems. Obviously this is just an idea, do not know for sure. Charlie "Bruce Remick" wrote in message news:QJ5ug.30360$8q.11800@dukeread08... Charlie I didn't stop NIS first-- I just did an uninstall. Mainly out of frustration after my annual subscription download totally screwed up my computer operations. I tried Norton-suggested fixes but I just seemed to get deeper in trouble. I'm eating the 40 bucks just to get things working normally again, as they seem close to doing now. So I can't reinstall without paying another $40 or more to Norton, which I'm not willing to do. Like you mention, I have heard that there would be some scattered remnants of NIS wandering around my system after the uninstall, but I guess I presumed they wouldn't cause any problems. To remove Norton completely, see:
http://basconotw.mvps.org/SymRem.htm and: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039 I use, and recommend, AVG Free: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5 or: http://www.grisoft.com/doc/40/lng/ww When prompted, choose Custom Installation and *uncheck* e-mail scanning when you see the option. Norton, and McAfee, products are not Outlook Express friendly, and I don't know of any OE-MVP that would recommend using them. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Bruce Remick" wrote in message news:KB6ug.30362$8q.23973@dukeread08... I was scared away by the Norton uninstall warnings in the links you suggested (e.g. Don't try this unless you know what you're doing, etc.) so I left the scraps alone. I did download the AVG Free you recommended. Bruce |
