Open OE. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree on the
left. File/Work Offline. File/Folder/Compact all folders. Wait until it's
done.

While in OE I clicked on File Folder Compact
Instead of doing that, click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder
tree and then click on File/Folder/Compact all folders. Do this with OE
off line, of course.

Did you click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree before
compacting?

You may have a corrupted identity. Make a new identity in OE and import all
of your messages from the old identity. After making sure everything works
in the new identity you can delete the old identity.

Before replying please read my siggnature this time.

Have you tried what I suggested? Highlight one message an then Ctrl+A
highlights them all. Get them out of OE default folders.

Some people have to do things "their way" and due to their
hardheadedness, will not listen to others who obviously know more than
they do.
