Default Default E-mail program

All of a sudden, I am unable to have outlook express as the default e-mail
program. The option to name Outlook Express under Tools and Options is
"greyed out".
The option under Internet Explorer under tools and programs shows Outlook
Express as the default mail program.
But, I cannot use the send command under any other application program
including Word, Excel, etc. and also Internet Explorer.

Error message says there is no default mail program and telss me to set up
one under "Outlook". I dont't use Outlook.

Any Ideas how to solve problem?

Re-register Outlook Express as your default mail program.

Go to Start | Run and type the following:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /reg
(Check the path to msimn.exe to make sure that is correct)

Make certain to include the quotations marks and the space between the
ending quotation mark and the slash.

Then open Internet Explorer and go to Tools\Internet Options\Programs and
set OE as the default mail (and news) program.

If you only experience a problem when attempting to send a link, then also
look at this KB article for a registry edit that may be of help:

Default Default E-mail program

Hi Jim,
Thanks for your help. I had reviewed prior postings and tried your
recommendations before.
But, I tried again from the Run command as you suggested. IE already had OE
as the Default Mail program and I chose it again.
Went to OE Tools, Options and looked under General and found that the option
to set OE as the Default Mail Handler is still greyed out. I will reboot and
take another look.
How do I look at the registery to see what is specified as the default mail
handler?

Default Default E-mail program

Hi Jim again,

I think I described my problem incorrectly as it appears that OE is the
default mail handler under OE and IE, but am still unable to use the send
command (Page or Link) with any other application.
Error message says "Either there is no default mail client or the current
default mail client cannot run the current request. Please run Microsoft
Office Outlook and set as the default mail client.
Does this make sense to follow the suggestion?

What exactly are you attempting to send with "any other application?" What
application? Outlook Express is a simple MAPI and cannot handle complex
sending. Really need to know more details of what you are trying to do and
with what application. You might also want to look at this KB article.

Default Default E-mail program

Hi Jim,

I am an experienced user and use the send feature frequently with Word,
Excel, Front Page, Publisher, Internet Explorer, etc. I
have never had a problem using the send feature with any of the variations
options(Attachement, Review, Link, etc) in the last several years with any
application using OE until last week. The error message I put in my last
reply was from IE and I have tried the send feature with all of the
applications and get error messages of different types.
