.... I have even tried a complete reinstall of XP Home When I try to run gpedit.msc as suggested, I'm told that the program does not exist. Search for *.msc so you find the directory where its located. Steve, The OS is XP Home. Apparently it doesn't have Group Policy utilities by design. http://expertanswercenter.techtarget...973117,00.html (Microsoft.com search for gpedit "XP Home" ) quote So, the best alternative is to edit the registry using Regedit. /quote Got a .reg file handy? EG BTW I have no idea what the OP is looking at which requires use of gpedit.msc. If it's in a KB article somewhere I suspect he could be looking at instructions for XP Pro users by mistake. Usually KB articles meant for both systems have to include both techniques for changing registry values. FYI Robert --- |

Thanks. I missed the fact it was XP Home. I'm not sure why he was trying
to do that either, except he had problems with attachments. steve "Robert Aldwinckle" wrote in message ... "Steve Cochran" wrote in message ... Found the answer to all this. It was a problem with Windows Defender Beta.
The Registry hack is he http://www.castlecops.com/print-1-148221.html Although personally, I think it is disgraceful that Microsoft leaves us poor mortal users in a position where we have to go blundering around in the registry. But problem solved anyhow. Thanks to all for your help. Alias Block images is not checked either. I have now changed my setting to restricted zone, but this hasn't helped. I'm pretty sure that this is a new "feature" that Microsoft has added, because I was able to read the same attachments earlier this morning. Are you using Hotmail with OE? I have all the updates and am not experiencing this problem on three computers so I don't think it's the updates. Alias Not using Hotmail, I have accounts with Yahoo and Force9.net. However, these messages have already been downloaded to OE6, and I have been able to open the attachments previously. Last ditch suggestion: tick the Do not allow attachments ..." and "Block images ..." and then close OE. Open it again. Untick them. Close it again. Open it and see if there's any joy. Also, try right clicking on Internet Explorer/Properties and click on the Delete Files button and tick Delete all off line content, click OK. If neither works, perhaps your identity is corrupt. Create a new identity, import everything from the old one and, if it works properly, delete the old identity. Alias Tried all the ticking and unticking with no joy. Not sure about the creating a new identity bit. My wife has a separate account on the same machine, and she is experiencing exactly the same problems with her email. Also, I have tried to download a few things from the internet, and although they appear to be saving, when the download completes, they aren't there. (I thought I'd try IE7 to see if it made a difference.) I have removed Windows XP Service pack 2, and am presently able to read attachments and download files. This is the same state that it was in before I last applied SP2 and everything went pear-shaped. |

I'm glad to see you found the answer, but I wouldn't blame MS for this. Beta
means it is in testing mode and you use it at your own risk. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Dr Weekes-Money" wrote in message ... Found the answer to all this.
